In the past I've had a hard time getting the "extras" in our week. Those things like art projects, fine arts- composers, artists, poetry, and hymns.
I happened across this blog where she shares her morning time routine. I loved this idea and adapted it to our day. This is basically a time where we all sit together and talk about goals or upcoming events. We'll do prayer requests and our Bible time.We then go over our habit that we're working on. We'll study our poet, composer, hymn, or artist. Then, I'll read from Shakespeare or any other literature we're on at that time. I also include our short geography lessons.
It's casual and so much fun. Really. It has changed the whole atmosphere. We fit these extras in and have loved every second of it!
They usually last about an hour. We don't do each one of these things every day, so if we have a project to work on then we don't do literature or maybe geography that day.
Here is an example of our day with Morning Gatherings:
(the hours are not exactly this all of the time, but close)
7:00 make beds, get dressed, eat breakfast
8:00 do daily chores
8:15 daily quiet time (we all read our bible on our own)
8:45 math
9:15 morning gatherings. Bible study, memory work, habit, fine arts study, geography, literature or projects
10:15 language arts
10:50 Read Alouds and History or Nature
11:30 or 12:00 Lunch
That's it. I'm not sure how something so simple has helped our day so much, but I'm so glad we started these. We've been doing this all summer (without the regular schedule) and it is one of my favorite things about our day!

Summer of the Birds
Sometimes I have a hard time with nature study. We don't live in a place with just a whole lot going on, but just like the old saying goes, if you "stop and smell the roses" you will find some interesting things.
God really does have a lot going on no matter where you're at.
One morning I went out to water my hanging fern and a little finch flew out and right over my head. So I gently lowered the plant down and sure enough, inside were the four sweetest little eggs. I called for the boys to come see, and from then on we watched that nest like a hawk. :)

At first we thought this was a sparrow, but after seeing the beautiful daddy with red markings drop by we researched and found that this was a House Finch couple.
I never got a picture of him, but he really was beautiful.

A week or so after the discovery we peeked in and there they were!

We thought there was only three. A few more days went by before we finally noticed the forth little one was in there.

We loved watching the fledglings as they were developing their wings...and fuzzy heads.

And just like that, they were ready to go.

Our boys have learned so much about birds this year. They are loving every bit of it, and so am I! We picked up Thornton Burgess' Bird Book and can't wait to read it!

Vacation Part 1
Last month we packed up the car and headed to Branson, MO! It was quite a drive, but we have tons of audio books, coloring, and snacks to keep the boys happy.
When I was little, my family went to MO. The thing I remember most was the drive there. My dad is a back roads off the map type of man, and it really was the most gorgeous drive ever. So that's the way we went.
We went through the sweetest town in Arkansas. Eureka Springs. If I didn't have such antsy boys, I would have loved to explore the whole town!

We did get to stop in and see the Thorncrown Chapel. Made of glass! I had been in it when I was a little girl. It sure is a stunning place.

On our way out of town, we stopped at one more place just to take in all the beauty.

And this beauty was amazing to sit and watch!
The Pileated Woodpecker

We spent our days exploring and swimming! It was low key and very fun.
Jaiden sure had his moments though ;)

Brighton is terrified of heights and didn't want to join us climbing this wood tower. Its melted my heart to see Tristin encouraging him to do it. He helped him all the way to the top!

And we found a little friend :)

Be sure to check back for the 2nd part of this trip! It gets more beautiful than you can imagine!

Summer Reading: Homeschool
I'm still stuck in May. Does that surprise anyone??
We went on vacation at the beginning of May so you can bet I have a lot of pictures to share. Soon.
I have (for the past few months) been preparing for our summer schedule.
We are almost done with our Math and reading programs. We already finished spelling, but I'm debating whether or not to keep it going through the summer on a new level or not.
For now we will just review, at least until mid July.
Our summer schedule is going to be short and sweet. For math we will review with games and activities.
I'm bringing out Family Math. A wonderful book with games for helping in math for all levels. The boys have always loved this book, and I can't wait to see what new games are in store for us this summer!
I'll be reading Ray's Arithmetic aloud to the boys while they work on our chalkboard wall. You can use it for free here.
I'm also going to purchase a few games to play weekly with the boys.
Speed, for multiplication review.
Zues on the Loose
and I'm bringing our Sum Swamp for teaching Brighton to add and subtract. Tristin loved this game at his age!
And then we have reading!!
I am so thrilled about this summer and all the reading activities we have lined up. I mean, really excited about this haha.
First of all, have you heard of Thriving Family? It's a magazine from Focus on the Family, and this summer they are offering a summer activity called Around the World in 60 Days. It's a free "trip" around the world! You'll have the opportunity to explore 27 different countries on six continents. For each day of the trip, they have a biblical lesson and an activity that will give you glimpse into another culture.
Along with that, I came across a FANTASTIC summer reading list all about adventure at Redeemed Reader!
Seriously, you do not want to miss this! They have a wonderful list of books and alternate books for all ages. Be sure to check out the current posts like this one, that include activities and journaling ideas.
I am going to buy or make a summer reading notebook for the boys. Hopefully it will be full of interesting and wild adventure by the end of the summer. And they would have learned history, geography, art, science, writing, and reading without really even knowing it! Pretty sneaky ;)
Some books and activities we will be reading and journaling this summer are:
We are going to read The Green Ship, and along with creating our kid friendly backyard I will be using Se7en's green ship inspiration. Oh my!
Around the World and will be doing the discussion questions and note booking ideas that I mentioned already.
How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
Toot & Puddle Top of the World
Dodsworth series is so much fun.
The Middle of Somewhere (after Around the World)
The Penderwicks :A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy (bedtime reading)
Mr. Poppers Penguins Audio CD
The Wind in the Willows
Mercy Watson (we sure love this pig!)
Library Lion
Nate Saint
Continue our reading through Little Pilgrim's Progress. Tristin LOVES this book.
How God Used a Thunderstorm for family devotional.
Pippi Longstocking
Little Tim and the Brave Sea Capitan
My Father's Dragon Series
Nature:
The boys are very big into constellations right now, so we will be spending most nights sitting outside looking and seeing what all we can find! I may pick up a copy of Find the Constellations.
They are also loving learning about birds (part 2 coming soon). I have an incredible bird app that we love to explore and listen to. And we will be reading the Burgess Bird Book on our kindle. Cards to go with the book. And these beautiful birds would be wonderful for nature journals or hanging on the wall.
If you follow me on instagram (Jeana B) you know that we were observing the sky one day. While doing that we talked about the clouds, rain, and then how a rainbow is made. It was so much fun just to sit on the back porch and discuss all of their interests! We then got the hose and made our own rainbow. They just loved it!
A Drop of Water look like a beautiful book I'd love to get my hands on.
On lazy days I am thrilled to have found The Magic School Bus episodes on netflix. Woohoo!
What are your plans for the summer? What's on your reading list?
I'm working on a book list for myself. I'll share that one when I'm done!
Have a great summer! Grab a glass of tea or lemonade, sit outside in the sunshine, and bring some books along!

Nature Study: Birds part 1
We've been keeping an eye on this little beauty right outside of Tristin's window!

I don't think she appreciated me taking pictures of her..it was making her a bit nervous. She was literally getting her feathers ruffled haha ;)

We are going to keep a close eye on her as she so gracefully does what God created her to do. So far we've only seen one egg, and she sure doesn't leave that baby much at all.
We've read up on Doves, and found that the male and female take turns attending to the egg (male in the morning and afternoon, female evening and night). We are now keeping watch for 2 birds! We've learned that it takes about 2 weeks for the squab to hatch and they feed it crop milk for a few days before introducing seeds. After about 11-14 days they begin fledging.

Nature Walk and Craft
We aren't the best at nature studies, but I have been trying to get out intentionally for exploration at least once a week.
We noticed the difference in the blooms on the liriopi.
We had to bring a football along of course...?
Admired reflections.
And the beauty of the sun in the trees!

We collected sticks and leaves and made a frame and a little deer friend. Can't wait to see all those trees turn colors of the leaves we found!

School Days
My goal this year is to try to do school 5 weeks and use the 6th week for planning. I can look over our 5 weeks in advance, order books, visit the library, print anything I need to print ahead of time.
That works best for me, because if I don't have what I need when I need it, I kind of get stuck..and don't proceed well after that.
I look through my list of Read Alouds, History literature, Ambleside readings, Fine Arts prints and resources, and projects that we will cover over the next 5 weeks and either print them, get them from the library, or order them.
We are already starting our 4th week of the 2012-2013 year! Wow. Here's what we've been up to and will continue this week and next before we break of my week of planning.
Bible: Family Reading Bible (Genesis)
Brighton (pre K): My Father's World days of Creation, letter S and sun study. We will begin letter M and moon study tomorrow, and next week will be letter L and leaf study.
I do not do every activity in the curriculum with him because he is in preK and we only spend 30 min. a day on his lessons.
Tristin (year 2): Singapore Math 2A (3 pages a day)
Spelling: All About Spelling Level 1, we are on lesson 6, we started slowly to make sure he is mastering his lessons. Ending next week on lesson 10 or 12 ish.
Foreign language: We have started Greek. I didn't mention this in our curriculum for the year because I wasn't sure. Well we have started Code Cracker, and are on Unit 3 of the book. Tristin LOVES this book.
History: We have read more than halfway through King Arthur, and hopefully will finish it next week. We will also read The Kitchen Knight.
Science: Apologia Swimming Creatures. We have read Lesson 1. That covers aquatic animals, currents, tides, fresh water, and the Abyss. This week and next week we start Lesson 2 Whales.
Grammar: English for the Thoughtful Child. We are on lesson 13. Goal is to be finish lesson 16 next week.
We have also started Shakespeare, Pilgrim's Progress, Our Island Story, and The Burgess Animal Book. We are using these prints of the animals we learn about for our nature journal.
Starting (again) Paddle to the Sea.
I love these ideas to use with the book.
Along with this visual pinterest board.
We will be watching this on youtube as well.
So, there you have it. A breakdown of what we do each week. I'll update our plan for the next 5 weeks when I plan it.
I don't have an exact schedule we have to follow, just an outline to act as a guide. So far that's working for us.
I've been intrigued by these videos. looking into this grammar to use after we finish our English for the Thoughtful Child.

Our New School Room
When we were looking for a house, we had thought we wanted a school room. Even though this house does have room for what could be a school room, we found everything easily has a place in our family room.
This room has built ins, a place for all of the extras, and even our computer. Take a look!

To the right of the couch I put an old antique desk I found at a garage sale for $10. I placed a lamp on it so that it can seem like a side table. I love this space and it is great for independent work. If you look down to the right we have our All About Spelling board, I simply store it behind the desk when not in use.

The drawers hold their daily books.

The shelves hold our library. Books collected from garage sales and ordered on amazon. This shelf below is our science and nature study shelf.

Our nature collection.

On this side we have our reading nook.

If you look under the shelves we have our supplies and the teacher manuals and books, along with audio books and educational dvds. On top of the cabinet is a picture that corresponds with the artist we are studying.

And then on the other side we have our computer for days when we do extra videos or research.

We love this room; it works so well as a family room when needed and a school room otherwise.

Our School Curriculum 2012-2013
As busy as we've been the past few months, I've managed to look over curriculum we needed to change up or add to, and get it all ordered. Yay!
We plan to get started on the new year next week. So exciting!
We use the Classical and Charlotte Mason methods. I love so much about Charlotte Mason, but needed some of the Classical approach to sprinkle in.
We are doing 2nd Grade and PreK this year.
Preschool:
For Preschoool we are actually using My Father's World Kindergarten curriculum, because after looking it over, I know Brighton will do really well with it and it's just enough to let him do "school" without me planning a lot.
MFW includes unit studies, phonics, and character development, all biblical based. We will take it slow and spend 30-45 min a day doing this together throughout the day.
We also plan to do a lot of reading. We have an old Five in Row curriculum, that I want to add in with our reading. Nothing big like lap books, but just reading and talking about what we're reading.
2nd Grade:
Bible:
We are starting again with the Family Reading Bible. We read it last year, and have absolutely loved it. We follow the short path since Brighton and Jaiden sit in on the readings daily. It's an actual Bible with a reading plan throughout the whole Bible. It has discussion questions as well for each reading. We have all learned so much!
Math:
We are sticking with Singapore Math
We have loved it, and why fix something that isn't broken?! I actually picked up 2A-3B at a used curriculum sale for under $10!
We also love Family Math
Spelling:
This year we are using All About Spelling
After looking over it at a friend's house, I knew this would be a tremendous help for my full of phonics questions boy. I'm so excited about this!
Grammar:
We are sticking with English for the Thoughtful Child
It is very gentle and Tristin gets it. He does very well with this, again, no need for change. We will add volume 2 when we get there.
Writing:
We will do copywork from Scripture, poetry, and literature. We are also going to start a gratitude journal or wall. I'll post more when we get started.
Science:
We will continue with our Nature Journal from last year. We don't write in it, so it's available to use again. We have a lot more to explore at our new place which is a ton of fun!
We have added Apologia Swimming Creatures to our curriculum this year. We will take it slow, read additional literature and do projects. We are excited about this!
Will read The Burgess Animal Book
History:
For History we are reading books for the Middle Ages.
We will be reading (I can make a different post on the order we will read these)
Robin Hood
Good Queen Bess
The Kitchen Knight: King Arthur
The Shakepeare Stealer
Viking Ships at Sunrise and more Magic Tree House books
Michelangelo
Leonardo
Joan of Arc
The Door in the Wall
We will also include A Child's History of the World
and Our Island Story and Trial and Triumph
And more books I pick up throughout the year. I'll be sure to let you know!
Geography:
Continue though Paddle to the Sea
then start Tree in the Trail
Fine Arts:
Michelangelo
Da Vinci
Raphael
Bach
Handel
Haydn
Ambleside Online Poetry and term 2
Literature:
The Pilgrim's Progress
Parables from Nature
Understood Betsy
The Wind in the Willows
Little House on the Prarie
I love these two sites for helping with our booklists:

Weekend in OKC
We spent Memorial Day weekend together in Oklahoma City. We booked a kid friendly hotel with a fabulous pool right off of Bricktown. We spent our days swimming and the evenings walking Bricktown in search of a place to eat dinner. We had wonderful meals at The Cheesecake Factory, Fuzzy's Taco Shop, Crabtown, Panera Bread, and lunch at the zoo.
We spent a beautiful and hot Sunday morning at the zoo. The bears, giraffes, hippos, and monkeys were all so much fun to see, and the tigers were DARLING. They were full of energy as they wrestled and played in the water as their momma watched under a shade tree. The dad was here one minute, and gone the next. All of a sudden we saw him creeping low and watching. Watching the momma. He waited and finally..POUNCE! She jumped and he gave her a playful and loving rub with his head against hers the way cats do to someone they really love.
Really, one of the sweetest moments I've ever seen.
Another wonderful moment that captivated the boys..well all of us really, is about the only moment I got any pictures of the whole time because, you guessed it, my camera battery died. Again.
We went in to visit the most beautiful birds from Australia. They were just walking around all over the place. You could also feed them. Someone gave us their leftovers, so we got to spend time feeding these gorgeous birds!
Helping Jaiden feed them:

This was Tristin's favorite moment of the day:

Brighton enjoying the birds:

These birds were just stunning!!

I just stand amazed at God's attention to detail and creativity! Glory to God!
